TriSwim Giveaway and my Swimming Pet Peeves

Like many triathletes, I was not a swimmer growing up and while my swim stroke and efficiency have improved dramatically over the last 2 years, I am far and away a better cyclist and runner than I am a swimmer. It doesn’t help that I often dread going to the pool, mostly due to my swimming pet peeves …

Pet Peeves
1 – There are many triathlete jokes about chlorine (you might be a triathlete if … you smell like chlorine all the time) and they are all true. You go for a swim and two showers later you can still smell chlorine. I work in an office and regularly have to meet customers and chlorine is not my perfume of choice, but on swim days, it follows me everywhere, plus I hate the texture of my hair on swim days, even after multiple washings.

2 – Goggle marks. I have tried a dozen different pair and I have yet to find a pair that don’t leak or fog incessantly or (the absolute worst part) give me nasty goggle marks until after lunch. I am tired enough as it is, and these goggle marks make it look like I have serious bags around my eyes! Not attractive for morning meetings at the office. Right now I swim with Women’s Vanquishers and they don’t leak but the goggle marks are horrendous! I just heard of Sable Goggles and I am thinking about giving them a try, but I am not sure if they are worth the risk for $50. If you use Sable Goggles, I would love to hear from you.

3 – I am usually swimming at 5:30 a.m., plus a 15 minute drive, which means I am up early on swim days. I much prefer rolling out of bed and into my running shoes. Swimming requires too much prep work!

I know, it sounds like a lot of excuses. The good news (for my training at least) is that despite my dread, I drag my sleepy arse to the pool for a good 3 hours a week.

The better news? I am excited to report that I can now cross #1 off of my list of reasons I don’t like the pool! Yes, the chlorine is a w f u l , but I just got to test out SBR’s TriSwim products and I am a beliver! On top of getting rid of the unfavorable chrlorine perfume, I love what the shampoo and conditioner did for my hair! The conditioner smelled incredibly refreshing, the body wash lathered nicely and the lotion soothed my dry winter skin that hates the over-chlorinated pool! I will keep these in my swim bag and in my gym locker from now on!

The best news?

Now, if I could just do something about those pesky goggle marks … this photo is from Friday morning an hour after I got out of the pool with make-up on to cover the worst of it! You may have to click on the photo to enlarge it, but you can clearly see my goggle marks – and yes, they were there until at least 2 pm!

I have two girls, 12 and almost 14 years old. I bought a shampoo like this once to see if it made the chlorine smell go away. Then it disappeared before I could try it. One day I found it, empty, in my younger one's gym bag that she brings when she swims with me. She said it worked good with the smell. All the girls she swims with liked it too and they voted for me to buy more.

If I won I'm sure I still wouldn't get to try it since one of them would "take" it before I even knew I won. Oh well....as Rodney Dangerfield says "now we know why tigers eat their young."

I also wear the Womens Vanquishers and hate, hate, hate the goggle marks they leave around my eyes. I swim at 5:30am on Monday and Friday, the last thing I need on those days is to look more tired. I'd love to have the chlorine out shampoo and conditioner, my hair just seems dried out and gross on swim days and I have to spend more money on unkeep for my high and low lights.

Sign me up for 3 entries!! :)

I would love to get ride of the chlorine smell. My wife can tell when I miss a day at the pool because I don't "smell the same" which I think is code for I "don't stink." haha.

I checked out the website and the coolest thing I found was free! I loved the workouts/drills section. I am always looking for new swim workouts and I'll take free ones whenever I can.

I follow you in Google reader and posted about the giveaway on my blog today :)

I totally agree about the goggle marks around the eyes. Someone in my office suggested I swim during lunch. Are you kidding me?????

I completely agree with all of your swimming pet peeves! I have heard great things about TriSwim products and will definitely have to give them a try. My hair always smells like chlorine, so if this stuff works, then I'm getting it!

I have my own routine that works for me (its called swimming in the outdoor pool... wink wink) but I'm very curious about the anti-fog towelettes. Also curious to see how the stuff does in salt-chlorine pools. The Woodlands pool makes me itchier than our indoor pool does.

I was talking to De'Ette about this today after practice.... She's been putting vaseline around her eyes and says that it greatly reduces her goggle marks. Not really sure how I'd feel about vaseline on my face, but it may be worth a try.

I checked out the Tri Swim site. Would love to use that chlorine-out skin care stuff! I hate having that dried up chlorinated feeling all day.

I think you know I follow your blog :)

I am a new follower. My hair is getting a bit crusty, so I checked out the site and would like to try the shampoo. I think I might order some today.

Great blog!

Hi Anne,
I really think that you should try those Sables! Why don't you give me ring about it? If you don't rave about them, I'll get you a full refund and even pay to have them shipped back. We came up with our motto 'Swear by your goggles - not at them' from all the triathletes who would come to our booth after a race to tell us that they swear by their Sables (in a good way). Our goggles are not perfect, but that's what we strive for and that's why I think that Sables are the best out there.

I've really enjoyed reading your blog.
