Music is a Time Machine

Music is a time machine for me.

When I hear Alanis Morissette's hit, "Isn't It Ironic," I am 16 years old again, driving around in my 1989 Toyota Camry, braces on my teeth, with not a worry in the world. Ok, lots of worries, none of which were really important!

When I hear ABBA's "Dancing Queen," I am taken back to my wedding reception, spinning around in circles in my wedding dress. I have never had so much fun dancing as I did on my wedding day. Twirling in that dress was amazing.

How is this triathlon related?

I mentioned in my Ironman FL Run Race Report that I heard Katy Perry's "Waking Up In Vegas" with about a mile to go on the run playing over speakers in a cheering section on the course. I couldn't help but start to sing along. It made me smile and gave me chills because I had a burst of adrenaline and I knew that I was so close to achieving my dream.

Fast forward to today's run at lunch. 70 degree, sun shining, makes you happy to be alive weather. A mile or so into my run, "Waking Up in Vegas" came across my iPod speakers and I was transported back to Panama City Beach. Chills went down my spine and I could hear the crowd cheering me on. I smiled for the rest of my run.

I love how music can capture a moment in time that way. What songs rev up your time machine?

I had the exact same thought about "Isn't it Ironic?" just a few days ago driving to work. Took me back to driving to a soccer game with my teammates in high school. As for "Dancing Queen", well when I finally get around to the end of my race report, you'll see I have a new memory of that song. It was my own version of Waking Up in Vegas I guess! It's awesome to relive that, isn't it?

I love that aspect of music. In fact, its often a song that give me the idea for a blog entry. It is also the reason I try to post a lyric quot as a thematic intro to a lot of my posts.

"time of my life" by greenday reminds me of college and my sorority sisters. "Carolina on my mind" reminds me of the week we met in chapel hill at university directories training!

One of the frightening things is when these songs that mean so much to you and remind you of special times are regularly played on the oldies station.

Dare I say cassette, 8 track, album or even 45? I won't say 78.

Dittos on RockStarTri comment. As a guy that had 78s (do you even know what they are?), my reflections go back to Frank Sinatra singing "Strangers in the Night". Nothing like coming down the IM chute to that music...
JUST kidding!! about the Frank Sinatra stuff that is... actually a little Lil'Wayne sounds better but he doesn't have anything I can play on my 78 record player...

Hearing crowds that aren't there can also be called schizophrenia, my dear....better watch out!
